A historical evening. A dream became reality. Haiti, at the end of a sensational match against the Nicaraguan team on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 at the Ergilio Hato stadium in Willemstad, Curaçao, snatched its ticket for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
More than fifty years after that first participation, the Haitian national team will return again in the final phase of the World Cup. This time, the last qualifying match was played on a symbolic date: November 18.
This date, rooted in Haitian historical memory, marks the last battle of the indigenous army against the racist and enslaved French colonial army: the battle of Vertières, which ended more than two centuries of enslavement of black men and indigenous peoples.
Thus, this qualification is not only sportive; It also has historical significance for the Haitian people, due to the date of November 18.
From the start of the match, at the 9th minute, Louicius Don Deedson opened the scoring for Haiti, giving hope to the selection and the Haitian people. At the end of the first period, Ruben Providence doubled the lead, extinguishing the hopes of the Nicaraguan team.
However, it took a draw between the Costa Rican and Honduran national teams to allow Haiti to qualify for the 23rd edition of the final phase of the 2026 World Cup.
